Traditional and current state symbols of Belarus and the Referendum of 1995

The bachelor thesis Traditional and current state symbols of Belarus and the Referendum of 1995 analyzes the role of state symbols and their changes in the belarusian history. In the opening it describes the form, meaning and the rules of use of the belarusian flag, coat of arms and national anthem according to current belarusian laws. Furthermore, it deals with the evolution and changes of the symbolism during the 20th century: from the collapse of the Russian empire, when the first attempts of creating the Belarusian state appeared, during the soviet period, when the form of the current symbols was specified and after 1991 when Belarus gained independence. Another chapter is dedicated to the Referendum of 1995 which resulted in adopting the modified soviet symbols. It explains the circumstances of the existence of two sets of symbols and the situationwhen some Belarusians more likely identify themselves with the traditional symbols. In the conclusion of the thesis is dedicated to the current status of the symbols. It researches the Belarusians' attitude towards the current state symbols, the efforts of state to strengthen their position, their role in establishing the belarusian national identity and on the contrary, using of the traditional symbols by certain groups of the society.
